The check is woven for us in a 260g wool-silk on a 2/2 twill, which is light enough that the jacket can be built with no canvas at all. Removing the canvas removes the shoulder pad, the chest piece and roughly 300g, and it changes what the garment is for — it hangs from the shoulder seam rather than sitting on the shoulder, and it creases. We consider the creasing correct. The pattern is matched across the front closure and around the patch pockets, which costs an extra half metre per jacket and is the first thing a tailor looks at.
