Vegetable tanning takes about six weeks in pits rather than a day in a drum, and produces a leather that is stiffer at the start and takes a patina rather than wearing through a finish. We leave the bag unlined because a lining hides both the workmanship and the leather; the inside is the same hide as the outside, skived down at the seams. The edges are burnished by hand in four passes with gum tragacanth, which is roughly forty minutes per bag and the single clearest way to tell hand finishing from a painted edge.

Stiff for the first month
Vegetable tanned, so it starts rigid and softens. Worth knowing rather than a complaint.
